Trains to run on Sri Lanka's Southern expressway after renovation

Sri Lanka Ministry of Transport announced the opening of the entire Southern railway from Colombo to Mathara from April 19.

The railway is fully renovated from Colombo to Mathara and now the trains can speed over 100 km per hour easily, says the Ministry.

The railway was renovated under an Indian credit line and the contract was carried out by Indian company Ircon.

The renovation was in three phases and under the first phase the Mathara to Galle section was repaired. Galle to Aluthgama section was closed next since July 2011 and finally the Aluthgama to Kaluthara section was renovated.
